Damn it all.
Every answer I give, Gwen will spawn ten more. I looked her up enough to realize that sheâs thorough. Even some of her more obscure replies to other wild conversations is founded in facts she can point to. If I lose her trust, I lose her as an ally here. And without someone to watch my back, Iâm dead. Even I have to sleep sometime and I donât want to advertise how adept I am at this point. No doubt they saw me heal both of us, but thatâs small magic.
How much do I tell her?
The fact she knows about me means her entire world is about to change. Iâm not one of those monsters thatâll fuck with a humieâs brain just for my own peace of mind. I canât do that to her, and selfishly, I donât want to take the memories of this weekend away from her.
Gwen knows. Thereâs no putting that monster back under the bed.
I look at her arm, pleased itâs healing well. When I found her, it must have just happened ten or so minutes beforehand. If the poison had spread, sheâd be in much worse shape.
âWhat did you do earlier? Whyâs my arm almost healed?â she asks.
âWould you believe me if I said magic?â
Gwen just stares, no doubt waiting for the rest of the answer. But there isnât one. Her brows swoop up in disbelief, and she doesnât have to open her mouth.
I groan and reach over for the cup of nectar, sipping it sparingly. Drinkable liquid is going to be the hardest thing to get here.
âIâm not being funny, Gwen. Magic. I healed you with magic.â
âThen why donât you heal yourself with magic?â
âBecause thatâs not how magic works. I canât heal myself.â
âWait.â She plops down next to me. âI thought gargoyles turned to stone during the day. Whatâs up with that?â
I canât hide the sound of disgust that wells up out of me. âFor fuckâs sake, can we focus on one thing at a time, Gwen?â
She holds up her hands. âSorry. Pick your bar fucks a little more careful next time.â
I swallow down a snarl. My knee jerk reaction is that I do not like her referring to herself as a bar fuck. I take a deep breath and set that curious reaction aside. âAs if it wasnât already hard enough, now Iâve got to play twenty questions. Is that what youâre telling me?â
She shrugs.
Itâs a massive improvement over the running and screaming.
I reach over and grab the skewer. âAs long as you eat, Iâll talk.â
There. She canât eat all night and Iâve given myself a comfortable out of this never-ending story Iâm about to have to tell.
âItâs best if I begin where all of this started. This way, Iâm not backtracking to explain things. So. There isnât any government oversight when it comes to us. There used to be. Monsters fought monsters right alongside the humans when it came to the American Revolution. Used to be the US government operated right alongside their paranormal counterpart.
